Movember goodies for you and me

on Mon, 11/22/2010 - 15:42

As some of you already know, I've been doing a fundraiser this month called Movember. I'm growing a mustache during November - thus Movember - as support for the fight against men's-focused cancers (e.g. prostate).

I'm happy to announce that I can now offer a bit of graft to incent you to support me. For every tax-deductible donation over $50 to my Movember fundraising, Bragging Rights will send you a free pair of sports sunglasses - with a $40 retail value. Visit their website above, and see the sunglasses available. (You'll have to pay $4.95 for shipping, but that's a small price to pay!)

Great orchestras are amazing

on Thu, 10/07/2010 - 21:27

Last night, I went to a concert by the New England Conservatory of Music's Philharmonia. This is an orchestra made up of undergrad students at NEC. The pieces on the bill were Petrouchka by Stravinsky and the New World Symphony by Dvorak. (Sorry, these names should have diacriticals; I'm not going to bother just now...)

At the end, I tweeted "Just finished hearing Stravinsky & Dvorak at New England Conservatory. An orchestra is a violent, living, joyous thing to experience. #love".

It was amazing to hear these kids.

Who doesn't love summer?

on Sat, 08/07/2010 - 15:09

This could be the best day of summer this year.

I just finished a fast, satisfying 50 mile ride. Now I'm sitting on the back patio, 73 degrees, full sun and cloudless blue sky, surrounded by amazing nature.

  • Three hummingbirds talking to each other as they feed at the honeysuckle & morning glory. (I've never heard hummingbirds talk before, nor seen more than one at a time - they're pretty solitary.)
  • Honeybees working the Ruby Spice & white Hydrangea bushes that are in full bloom. You'd think I have a beehive next to me there's so much buzzing going on.
  • Dragonflies perched on the tips of the

Paceline ettiquitte

on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 17:57

My friend Tom Pincince sent me the below in email. I've so often wanted to point cyclists to a good list like this (but not had one) that I thought I'd capture it here for posterity.

Items 7-10 are my own additions.

A note from one of the stronger guys I ride with in the morning. He just got back from climbing the Tourmalet. Note that I was dropped mercilessly this morning.

Regards,
Tom

Last Saturday night in France, I got a lot out of a discussion and wanted to pass it along.

Happy, happy, Jay, Jay

on Thu, 02/18/2010 - 12:34

Well, I finally wrote the "big check," and bought the bike of my dreams.  Yeah, I know this blog site is called underheadphones, and yes, I do like spinning.

But truth be told, I spend MANY more hours on a bike than I do spinning records.  And it's my real passion.  (Does that suggest I should rename my blog?  Hmmm...)

And this is "The Bike."  A Specialized S-Works Roubaix SL2.  Long name, but read "This is what the pro teams ride."  Because (for some unknown reason) Specialized doesn't sell this in the SRAM Red groupset I wanted, I built this up from the frameset.
