Book Review: Fuzzy Nation

on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:15

Fuzzy NationFuzzy Nation by John Scalzi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Summary: Fast read (for me); dashed thru it in 3 hours.

More: Not a bad read; not over-the-top great, though. Essential conclusions on my part:

  • Fairly simple premise, and what happens in the end is almost predictable from the moment every plot twist is introduced.
  • Approachable writing. Very easy to read.
  • Despite essential predictability, there are a pleasant set of events that surprise, and keep you engaged.
  • A nice exploration of what the rules of the game ought to be were we ever to encounter other suspect-sentient species - either here on

Book Review: "Selection Event" - a Good Book to NOT read

on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 13:16

Selection EventSelection Event by Wayne Wightman

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

If I could give this a zero, I would.

The post-apocalyptic genre is well-travelled. At this point in writing-time, an author needs to do something pretty special to make this topic interesting. This author sadly failed.

Essentially, the author's point ends up "Belief systems are bad; believers in them force people into thinking their way, and if you don't believe that way, the believer's natural reaction will be to kill you. So, the only belief system that works is Libertarianism. You must believe this way, or we will kill you."

dj shuze (DJ name now deprecated): Turkey Podcast

on Mon, 11/28/2011 - 15:20

I took the opportunity of a lazy, day-after-Thanksgiving Friday morning to pull together a few tunes into a new podcast episode.  As usual, it's available on iTunes (the one dated 11/25/11). If you like it, please be sure to rate it in the iTunes store.

It was kind of a low-energy day for me, so the track selection reflects it. They're still deep & bassy, but they're mostly in a minor key, and definitely more introspective than energy-generating. I don't think it edges over into melancholy, but you'd have thought I did this on a cloudy day. (It wasn't; the day was beautiful).

2012 Ronde van Vlaanderen

on Fri, 11/04/2011 - 15:07

Time to start planning for 2012. In 2010, I went with my buddies Scott & Joe to the Ronde van Vlaanderen professional cycling race in Belgium. The day before the pros race, the route is open to amateur cyclists of all levels.

We rode with 8,000 (or more) other crazy cyclists over a route full of cobbled roads, leg-ripping short hills called "muurs", and had a blast. It was a rainy day in April, which made it even more epic.

Time to start thinking about 2012. The route was changed this year - with much howling from race fans, because it moved what had often been a decisive climb at the end to

New podcast episode posted: Deep House mix

on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 10:25

I did a new mix while the power was out over most of the Boston area this last weekend. (Judy & I were fortunate to only lose power for 5 hours, so I had a lazy Sunday.) You can get it by subscribing to my podcasts on iTunes. I hope you in enjoy it.

(UPDATE 2016 March 3: I've switched to using both dogglounge.com and Mixcloud.com to host my podcasts, because I'm spinning regularly now at the former, and find the latter more helpful for tracklists.)

This one is a mix of Deep House tunes. It's actually where my heart is happiest.
