History in the making: Acquia article in the Boston Globe

on Tue, 05/26/2009 - 14:39

Today in the Boston Globe there's an article in the business section about Acquia. It's gratifying to see our company start to get visibility outside the close-knit Drupal community. I just wanted to take a moment to expand on it a bit.

The article led with a key point about Acquia / Drupal: free software is disruptive. "Free" both as in the Free Software Foundation's "liberty" definition, as well as in Free Beer definition.

The Grand Tours - the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, etc. - are the big dogs in cycling, and I'm sure TV rights are hard-fought. And while the Tour will always get good TV coverage, the Giro nearly didn't get any coverage in the US this year because Versus network (who broadcasts most of the cycling we get to see here in the US) didn't agree to the Giro's deal terms.

But in stepped Universal Sports, and at the last minute rescued coverage for us here.

And boy, what a rescue.

But a hot skinny chick on a bamboo bike? I just had to blog about that. ;-)

Thanks velogogo.com. (Great "blog" you should subscribe to.)

Marten Mickos departure expected IMHO

Looks like Marten Mickos, one-time CEO of MySQL is leaving Sun. Matt Asay talked to Mickos, and had a sense that they key motivating factor was "(Mickos') frustration at Sun's bureaucracy."

I have no doubt this was a strong contributing factor. I've had my own experiences with Sun over the years, and while I love the technology they produce (which apparently enough other people like to keep them a big company), the business side of Sun can be maddening. Getting something done with Sun is typically a big exercise in patience.

But in contrast to Matt, I don't think the bureaucracy

This is just so cool that I have to put it here simply so I can remember to come look at it again in the future....

Pay attention to the sunlight curves, and watch the patterns of where the planes stream over the course of the rhythm of a day.
